Who We Are

A New Force for Community in Seattle

The word rubescent means to turn red — to flush with the warm light of dawn just before sunrise. It is the moment of everything possible, before the world decides what is and isn't. We believe that is where every person in our community stands.

Founded in 2026, the Rubescent Initiative is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit rooted in South Seattle. We exist to close the gap between this city's extraordinary resources and the communities that have been systematically excluded from accessing them — through direct programming, deep partnerships, and a long-term commitment to the families who call this city home.

Talent is universal. Opportunity is not. We exist to close that gap.

— Dr. Keisha Scarlett, Founder & CEO

We don't believe in short-term fixes. We believe in building the infrastructure of opportunity — the mentorship, the resources, the networks, and the support systems — that allow people to build their own futures on their own terms.

Seattle Focus

Building for the Whole City.

The Rubescent Initiative is embedded in the neighborhoods that have been most consistently underserved by Seattle's growth — South Seattle, the Central District, and surrounding communities where children of color make up the majority but access to opportunity remains scarce.

We don't parachute in. We build here. We stay here. We are accountable to the families and communities whose trust we earn through consistency, not campaigns.
